How does couples therapy work?
Marriage or couples therapy is a type of therapy where individuals involved in a romantic partnership meet with a therapist to improve their relationship, resolve conflict, repair hurt or betrayal, and increase relationship satisfaction.
Couples therapy takes place with both partners in the room during session. As a couple, you’ll explore the dynamics at play within your relationship and the patterns that are keeping you stuck in cycles of conflict and disconnection. Pinpointing the underlying dynamics within your relationship gives you the power to change those dynamics, reduce distress in your relationship, and see your partner from a new perspective.
Most couples come away from couples therapy with a new understanding of the patterns that cause disconnection in their relationship. They have a new and better way to communicate and connect with their partners.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, is the gold standard approach for working with distressed couples. EFT is a type of therapy that is rooted in attachment science and bonding. EFT asks the couple and therapist to work together to discover the interactional patterns in a couple’s relationship and consider how those patterns are fueling the conflict and distress the couple is experiencing.
EFT allows couples to externalize their problems and focus on how they can work together to disrupt negative cycles that are causing conflict. Couples are then able to reorganize their responses to each other and better meet their partner’s needs while having their own needs met as well.

Couples Therapy is available in person in Richland serving the Tri-Cities (Kennewick, Pasco, and Richland). Services are also available virtually for couples throughout Washington State through Telehealth.
